This sounds vaguely familiar to the first kernel update I performed on my
first Dell machine with Ubuntu pre-installed.  Turned out that the Dell
partitioning wasn't exactly "default Ubuntu", and the kernel upgrade added a
GRUB menu entry that pointed to the wrong place.  Doublecheck your GRUB menu
entry's info, to be sure it's actually pointing to your /boot directory and
the correct kernel file.
