netstat -i is your friend. You trust the LEDs on your equipment? The 
equipment pulses those LEDs faster than your persistence of vision has a 
hope of detecting. At 100MHz, errors go by really fast. Heck, with a 
little talent and some packet fu, you could TDR the ethernet cable for 
breaks.

Just your pocket book. Then again, I don't have bad cables. Mine never 
fail. ;-)
