 AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ Brisbane 1.9GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM2
Processor - OEM
$59.00 including shipping.

as comparison.

A pair of used 1.8 zeons are $34 including shipping on ebay. (3600
total same as above athlon)

I like old school, but when new stuff is less than $25 from old stuff
and the hassle of finding a MB is much less and the total package of mb
and procs might be the same, then old school may be the more
expensive. The other thing is that you need a case that can handle an
extended ATX case for most xeon MBs. (there are full ATXs out there,
but rarer). While, if you are a bit strange, you can put a X2 on a
micro ATX.

I have not shopped the intel side, because the deals that have passed my
way have been AMDs.

My current estimate for a dual 4400 xeon is $40 for the MB and $40 for
the procs including shipping. That is if you shop and are patient.
My 4400 MB and procs ran about that. Real patient and lucky can shave
$15-20 off of that. Total $80. And there were issues with heat sink
mounts and back io plate(none) The proc supports MMX, SSE, SSE2,
Hyper-Threading.

OTOH, Frys was selling AMD X2 4400s for $70 including shipping(OEM no
fan) (05/24) and a nice retail MB for it was $50 from Newegg including
shipping. Total $120 for the new vs $80 for the old. The proc
supports MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, Enhanced 3DNow!, NX bit, AMD64 (AMD's
x86-64 implementation), Cool'n'Quiet, AMD Virtualization. IO plate and
heat sink mounts included.

The difference is $40 with a lot less hassles and risk. Ebay stuff has
no warrenty to speak of vs months to years for the new stuff.

Needless to say, my xeon obsession is over.

Please remember, I am a shopper and these deals pop up and disappear:
The best case for EBAY is about $55 for a dual 2.2 xeon if you are lucky
and real patient. The average case for the AMD is $115 for the proc and
$50 for the MB. Total $165 for both. So you could in theory save $110,
if you just went and bought vs best possible EBAY.
