Jason,
I've used the gnupg program Daniel mentioned on Windows and Linux, and
it works as advertised.  When I used it on Windows (2+ years ago), you
needed some "GNU Privacy Tray" to allow you to encrypt the E-Mail
text.  It was less than intuitive. (I didn't actually use it, but I
had to help some set it up so they could communicate with one of our
clients that was using a much more expensive product)

Works great with Evolution (Linux), though.
