GmailFS wants to be your friend.  Free network storage for all!

Still, like you said, you can't count on Google to keep your files 
intact or your accounts working.  At least if you're paying for your 
service, you can rightfully get angry if things aren't working; Google 
will just say "too bad for you."

I just use Subversion with a cheap web host to store my documents.  
Cheap and effective, and there's no way I can use all that space (250 
GB) anyway.
