Solar heating works just great. Systems can be used not only to heat
or pre-heat drinking water, but can be linked with in-floor radiant
systems. Depending on your latitude and weather conditions (sunny
days) they can be effective even during the winter. The heater boxes
will heat even when outside air temperature is low as long as there is
sufficient sun exposure. I've seen both passive (relies on natural
circulation) and active (pumped) systems. They also can differ
depending on whether the panel directly heats your water or whether
they operate indirectly with a heat exchanger (closed loop system).

My wife and I went on the blount county tour in 2005 or 2006 and it
was very interesting. They had a variety of homes both on- and
off-grid, alternative home construction (strawbale and earth-covered),
and several used solar water heating.
